Bloodstain Flashcards
what does BPA stand for?
Bloodstain Pattern Analysis
what can an investigator learn from the analysis of a blood spatter
type and velocity of weapon, number of blows, right or left handed, type of injuries
what are several methods for detecting traces of blood at a crime scene
light source, luminol, blood reagent tests, fluorescein
what is spatter
bloodstains created from the application of force to the area where the blood originated
what is origin/ source
the place from where the blood spatter came from
what is angle of impact
the angle at which a blood droplet strikes a surface
what is parent drop
the droplet from which a satellite spatter originates
what is a satellite spatter
small drops of blood that break off the parent spatter when the blood hits a surface
what are spines
the pointed edges of a stain that radiate out from the spatter, can help determine the direction from which the blood has traveled
what are the three basic blood type patterns?
passive, projected, transfer or contact
what are passive blood stains
patterns created from the force of gravity, example: drops, series of drops, flow patters, blood pools
what are projected bloodstains
patterns that occur when a force is applied to the source of blood, example: low, medium or high impact spatters, cast-off, arterial spurting etc.
what is transfer or contact blood stains
the pattern created when a bloody object comes into contact with a target surface, can be used to identify an object or body part. example: a wipe pattern, a swipe pattern.
