blood vessels Flashcards
what do blood vessels do
blood is carried by blood vessels to and from all cells in the body
what are the 3 main type of blood vessels
arteries, veins, capillaries
arteries
carry blood away from the heart under pressure
they push the blood around the body
the walls are thicker and more muscular
the hallow centre is narrower than equivalent vein
veins
veins carry blood back into the heart
veins have thinner walls and a wider central channel than arteries
they carry blood under low pressure
veins contain valves to prevent backflow of blood
capillaries
capillaries are thin walled (only one cell thick)
they have a large surface area forming networks at tissues and organs to allow efficient exchange of materials between the blood and tissue cell
capillaries, veins and arteries order
from heart –> arteries –> body capillaries –> veins –> to heart
