6
Q

What is the tunica media ?

A

Smooth muscle cells and connective tissue bordered by a distinctive inner boundary (internal elastic lamina) and outer boundary (external elastic lamina) made of elastic fibres

9
Q

What are features of elastic arteries ?

A
  1. Wide lumen
  2. Very thick walls with a thick tunica media
  3. Large amounts of elastic fibres and collagen to prevent overexpansion
  4. Incorporate vasa vasorum into their tunica adventitia to provide oxygen to the smooth muscle cells in the vessel themselves

10
Q

Features of muscular arteries

A
  1. A thick tunica media of smooth muscle to manage high arterial pressure
  2. Smooth muscle cells orientated in a circular not longitudinal direction

12
Q

Features of arterioles

A
  1. Approx 100um in diameter
  2. Smooth muscle cells orientated circularly and wrap around vessel
  3. Smooth muscle wrapping around entrance acts as a sphincter, regulating blood flow
  4. Pressure needs to be high enough to get through capillaries, but low enough not to rupture them

What are capillaries ?

A

Thin, fragile blood vessels forming a dense, tight network known as a capillary bed

15
Q

What are sinusoids ?

A

Specialised, widened capillaries that can permit a greater passage of erythrocytes.
They are found in bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes and liver.

16
Q

What are the 3 types of capillary endothelium ?

A
  1. Continuous- most capillaries
  2. Fenestrated- capillaries in endocrine glands
  3. Discontinuous- sinusoids
17
Q

What do venules do ? What is their main feature ?

A

Permit the exit of deoxygenated blood from capillary beds.
They don’t have a thick tunica media as pressure is low.

18
Q

How are varicose veins formed ?

A

If valves weaken and become incompetent, blood can pool in the veins leading to their distension

19
Q

What is the blood-brain barrier ?

A

The interface between blood and the tissues of the brain parenchyma

20
Q

What features of the BBB create a highly selective barrier ?

A
  1. A strong, endothelium
  2. Specialised tight junctions between endothelial cells
  3. The presence of additional cell barriers including astrocytes and pericytes
