Blood types Flashcards
Discovery of Blood Typing
- First to discover blood types (1900), Dr. Karl Landsteiner
- Observed blood transfusions: the transfer of blood from one to another.
- Noticed that the blood of the donor would clump/clot with that of the patient (Agglutination)
The four blood types
A, B, AB, O
What causes different blood types?
The difference in blood types is caused by different proteins found on the surface of the red blood cells known as Antigen A and Antigen B.
Antigen
substance that can trigger the production of antibodies
Antibodies
proteins produced by the immune system that destroy foreign substances (such as antigens)
Rh Factor in Blood
- The Rh factor is another protein factor on the Red Blood Cells
- The term Rh comes from the type of monkeys used to test for this factor originally, Rhesus Monkeys
hydrops fetalis
occurs when the baby’s organs are unable to handle the anemia. The baby’s heart begins to fail and large amounts of fluid build up in the fetal tissues and organs. A fetus with hydrops fetalis is at great risk of being stillborn.
hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) or erythroblastosis fetalis
the red blood cell destruction
