Blood Test Review Flashcards
Blood is
The only fluid tissue in the human body.
Classified as a connective tissue
Living cells
Formed elements
Non-living matrix
Plasma
Function of the blood (5)
- Oxygen and carbon dioxide transport
- Nutrient transport
- Waste Transport
- Transport of other essential molecules i. (antibodies, hormones,, etc.)
- Fighting infection
Centrifuge
The location where a blood sample is spun in to seperate the components
Hematocrit
Percent of a blood sample that is composed of RBC’s (Red Blood Cells)
Packed cell volume percentage
45% formed elements
Buffy coat
A thin, whitish-tan layer on top of the RBC fraction - Contains WBC (White Blood Cells)
Plasma
Liquid portion of a blood sample which is 55%
Physical characteristics of Blood
- Color range
Oxygen-rich blood is scarlet red
Oxygen-poor blood is dull red - pH must remain between 7.35 and 7.45. Anything above 7.45 is Alkaline
- Blood temperature is slightly higher than body temperature
Blood Plasma
- Composes of 90% of water
- Includes many dissolved substances:
Nutrients
Salts (metal ions)
Respiratory gases
Hormones
Proteins
Waste products
Plasma Proteins
Albumin - Regulates osmotic pressure
Fibrinogens (clotting protein) - help to stem blood loss when a blood vessel is injured
Globulins - help protext the body from antigens, offer immune support.
Formed elements of the blood
Erythrocytes - red blood cells, RBC’s; most numerous of all the blood cells
Leukocytes - White blood cells; WBC’s
Platelets (thrombocytes) = cell fragments
- cytes
