Blood supply (kidney) Flashcards
Why is there a rich blood supply?
The kidneys continuously cleanse the blood and adjust its composition
Renal Artery
the artery supplying each kidney
- divided into segmental arteries (as it approaches the hilum)
Segmental Arteries
gives off several branches called Interlobar Arteries
Interlobar Arteries
travel through the Renal columns to reach the cortex
- at the cortex- medulla junction, it gives off arcuate arteries
Arcuate Arteries
arch over the medullary pyramids
Cortical radiate arteries
supply the renal cortex
Approximately one-quarter of the total blood supply of the body passes through the kidneys each minute.
Venous Flow
cortical radiate veins to arcuate veins to interlobar veins to the renal vein (There are no segmental veins.)
