blood supply and lymphatics of head and neck Flashcards
what are the four parts of the vertebral arteries?
pre-foramina, foramina, suboccipital and intracranial
what artery is the first and largest branch?
vertebral artery
which way does the vertebral artery ascend?
ascend in the posterior aspect via transverse process
what branches does the vertebral artery give rise to?
- posterior inferior cerebellar arteries
- anterior spinal artery
- basilar artery
what is the basilar artery?
- formed by the union of both vertebral arteries
- gives rise to superior cerebellar arteries
- also provides some small branches
what are pontine arteries?
terminates and bifurcates into two posterior cerebral arteries (PCA)
Where does the right carotid common artery arise from?
occurs from the bifurcation of the brachiocephalic trunk, and roughly at the right sternoclavicular joint
where does the left common carotid arise from?
directly from the aorta
where does the common carotid split into internal and external?
at the level of the superior margin of the thyroid gland (C4)
what does the external carotid supply?
supplies area of of head and neck externally to the cranium
where does the external carotid artery travel to?
travels up the neck passing posteriorly to mandibular neck and anteriorly to the lobule of the ear
what does the external carotid divide into?
- superficial temporal artery
- maxillary artery
- superior thyroid artery
- lingual artery
- facial artery
- ascending pharyngeal artery
- occipital artery
- posterior auricular artery
what does the internal carotid artery supply?
does not supply any structures of the neck
provides anterior circulation of the brain
what branches does the internal carotid artery divide into?
- anterior cerebral arteries
- middle cerebral arteries
what is the posterior arch of circle of Willis?
formed by - posterior cerebral arteries, posterior communicating arteries and internal carotid arteries
