Blood Supply and Drainage of Abdominal Cavity Flashcards
Main supply of arterial blood to abdominal wall and viscera?
Paired parietal and visceral arteries
Unpaired visceral arteries
Main drainage vessels of abdominal wall and viscera?
Paired parietal and visceral veins
Unpaired portal vein
What is the importance of the portal vein?
To remove toxins from the blood
Why are portosystemic shunts relevant?
Blood drainage bypasses the liver causing an increase of toxic levels in the blood
How many lumber arteries are there?
9 pairs
What are the paired parietal arteries?
Lumbar Phrenicoabdominal Deep Circumflex External iliac Internal ilac
What do the external iliac arteries supply?
Abdominal wall and hindlimb*
What do the lumbar arteries supply?
Spinal cord, epaxial muscles and dorsal skin
Describe the lumbar arteries
Spinal and dorsal branch.
Spinal branch via infravertebral foramina and anastomose with the ventral spinal artery.
What does the phrenicoabdominal artery supply?
Abdominal wall and diaphragm
What does the deep circumflex artery supply?
Abdominal muscles, flank, skin cd. to abdomen and cr. thigh
Where does the phrenicoabdominal artery lie?
Dorsal to the adrenal glands
Where do the adrenal glands lie?
Cranial to the kidneys
What does the internal iliac artery supply?
Muscles over the ileum
What are the unpaired visceral arteries?
Renal and ovarian/testicular
Describe the renal arteries and what do they supply?
Right is more cr. to the left, supplies kidneys
Where does the left ovarian/testicular veins drain?
Into the left renal vein then to caudal vena cava
Where do the ovarian arteries lie?
Within the broad ligament
Where does the testicular artery lie?
Within the peritoneal fold
What does the ovarian arteries supply?
Ovaries, uterine horn and uterine tube
What are the paired visceral veins?
Renal, ovarian/testicular and hepatic
What are the unpaired visceral arteries?
Celiac
Cr. mesenteric
Cd. mesenteric
What visceral arteries anastomose?
Cephalic with oesophageal arteries and cr. mesenteric
Cr. mesenteric with cd. mesenteric and celiac
Cd. mesenteric with cr. mesenteric and cd. rectal
What branches come off the celiac artery?
Hepatic
Splenic
Left gastric
What does the cranial mesenteric artery supply?
Pancreas, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, spleen, colon, caecum
What does the splenic artery supply?
The spleen
What does the left gastric artery supply?
Stomach, pancreas, omenta
What does the caudal mesenteric artery supply?
Desc. colon
Rectum
What does the hepatic artery supply?
Liver and pancreas
What is significant about the jejunum blood supply?
It is available in arcades and allows for enterectomies
What are the paried parietal veins of the abdominal wall and viscera?
Lumbar Phrenicoabdominal Deep Circumflex External iliac Internal iliac
What do the lumbar veins drain?
Vertebral canal, epaxial musculature and dorsal skin
What do the lumber veins form?
The azygous vein
What do the deep circumflex veins drain?
Abdominal wall
What does the internal iliac vein drain?
Rectus, muscles over ileum and anal region
What does the phrenicoabdominal veins drain?
Abdominal wall and diaphragm*
What does the external iliac vein drain?
Hindlimb and abdominal wall
What does the hepatic vein drain?
The liver
What does the renal vein drain?
The kidneys
What does the ovarian/testicular veins drain?
Genitals
Where do the ovarian/testicular veins lie?
Ovarian - broad ligament
Testicular - peritoneal fold
How many blood supplies does the liver have? Name them.
2
- Hepatic artery, branch of the celiac artey
- Portal vein
Why is anastomoses important?
Tissue is not compromised as there is more than one route for blood circulation. So if one route is jepordised there is a backup.
What branches merge to form the portal vein?
Cr. mesenteric vein
Cd. mesenteric vein
Splenic vein
Gastroduodenal vein
What is the mammae blood supply equation
5 pairs
2 thoracic
2 abdominal
1 inguinal
What are the cr/cd mammae arteries?
Lateral thoracic artery Intercostal arteries Cr. superficial epigastric artery Phrenicoabdominal artery Cd. superficial epigastric artery Deep circumflex artery
What supplies the thoracic mammae?
Lateral thoracic and intercostal arteries
What supplies the cd. thoracis and cr. abdominal mammae?
Cr. superficial epigastric artey
What supplies the abdominal mammae?
Phrenicoabdominal artery
What supplies the abdominal and inguinal mammae?
Cd. superficial epigastric artery
What supplies the caudal abdominal and inguinal mammae?
Deep circumflex artery
What does the ovarian artery supply?
Ovaries, uterine tube, cr. part of uterine horn
What does the uterine artery supply?
Body and horn of uterus
Where does the uterine artery arise from?
The vaginal artery of which is from the internal pudendal, which is from the internal iliac
Where does the uterine branch of the ovarian artery lie?
Caudally in broad ligamnet
Where does the uterine artery lie?
Cranially in the broad ligament
What does the uterine artery anastomose with?
Uterine branch of ovarian artery - cranially
Vaginal artery - caudally
What is the pathway for ovarian drainage?
Ovarian vein -> caudal vena cava -> left renal
What is the pathway for uterine drainage?
Uterine vein -> internal iliac -> caudal vena cava eventually
Are veins satellite to arteries for mammae, ovary and uterus supply?
Yes
