Blood, Lymph and Tissue Fluid Flashcards
1
Q
What are the main components of blood? (4)
A
- Mainly plasma
- Erythrocytes
- Platelets
- Leukocyte
2
Q
What is in plasma? (8)
A
- Glucose
- Amino acids
- Mineral ions
- Hormones
- Large plasma proteins
- e.g. Albumin - maintaining osmotic partial pressure
- e.g. Fibrinogen - blood clotting
- e.g. Globulin - transport and immune system
3
Q
What are the functions of blood? (9)
A
- Transport oxygen and carbon dioxide
- Transport digested food
- Transport nitrogenous waste
- Transport chemical messages - hormones
- Transport food molecules from storage to necessary cells
- Transport platelet to damaged areas
- Transport cells and antibodies - immune response
- Maintain steady body temperature
- Minimises pH changes
4
Q
How does tissue fluid move out and into the capillary? (4)
A
- Tissue fluid moves from high to low hydrostatic pressure (from in the capillary to out) by osmosis
- Now on the end of the capillary there is low hydrostatic pressure
- Tissue fluid moves into the capillary (high to low hydrostatic pressure) through osmosis
- Left over fluid moves int the lymph vessels
5
Q
What is tissue fluid?
A
Plasma without large plasma proteins
6
Q
What is lymph?
A
- Similar to plasma and tissue fluid
- Less oxygen and fewer nutrients
- Contains fatty acids from small intestine
7
Q
How is lymph fluid transported? Any adaptations? (3)
A
- Squeezing of body muscles
- Has valves to prevent backflow
8
Q
What is the function of lymph nodes? (3)
A
- Lymphocytes build up to create antibodies
- Intercept bacteria and other debris from lymph (which are ingested by phagocytes)
- Defence system of the body
9
Q
Where are the major lymph nodes? (4)
A
- Neck
- Armpits
- Stomach
- Groin
