Blood Glucose Regulation Flashcards
What does endocrine mean?
A gland without a duct
• it secretes directly into the blood (hormones)
What does exocrine mean?
A gland with a duct
• secretes into a tube (enzymes)
Major endocrine glands
•pituitary gland (master gland)
• thyroid gland
• thymus
•adrenal gland
•pancreas
•testis
•ovary
Enzyme secretion
•Digestive enzymes: released into pancreatic duct (down proteins carbohydrates and fats)
•released into first part of small intestine (duodenum)
What is amylase
A carbohydrase
What is Trypsinogen
An inactive form of trypsin, a protease
What is Lipase
Breaks down fats
hormone secretion
only certain areas of the pancreas:
•islet
•langerphan cells
Two types of cells: alpha and beta
Alpha: produce glucagon
Beta: produces insulin
What does alpha produce
Glucagon
What does beta produce
Insulin
What is the normal blood glucose normative data(value)
4 to 6 mmol dm-3 (minus cubed)
Relation to blood glucose
Concentration is monitored by the islet of langerhans cells
Alpha and beta cells act by releasing a hormone
