Blood elements Flashcards
Antigen
warns your immune system to tell you if your body is harmful or night.
Agglutinins
antibodies that cause the red blood cell to clump together.
Rh factor
proteins that determine if the blood of two people is compatible when mixed.
Agglutination
helps identify bacterial antigens and identify bacteria.
Universal donor
these are 0 negative which can be used for transfusions for any blood type.
Universal recipient
means type AB-positive
Transfusion reaction
associated with transfusion of whole blood or onr of its components.
RBC membranes are subjected to many antigens
Antigen:
anything perceived as foreign that can generate an immune response
RBC antigens are referred to
agglutinogens because they promote agglutination (clumping)
Mismatched transfused blood is perceived as foreign and maybe agglutinated and destroyed
Potentially fatal reaction:
acute allergic reaction that could result in death
– Presence or absence of each antigen is used to classify what?
blood cells into different groups
Antigens of ABO and Rh blood groups cause what?
most vigorous transfusion reactions; therefore, they are the major groups typed
