Blood Dissorders Flashcards
Erythrocytes
Transport oxygen needed for cellular metabolism
Hemoglobin
Iron rich protien that binds with oxygen
Erythropoietin
Stimulates RBC production in bone marrow. Kidneys secret it when low oxygen levels are detected in the body
3 main factors of Anemia
- Blood loss
- Accelerated destruction of RBC’S
- Surpressed production of RBC’S
Arrhythmia
Irregular heartbeat
Cardiomegaly
Enlarged heart
Types of Anemia
Nutritional
Hemorrhagic
Hemolytic
Aplastic
Secondary
Nutritional Anemia
Poor diet or obsorbtion of Iron, B12, Folic Acid
Pernicious Anemia
Intestines cant properly obsorb B12
Hemorrhagic Anemia
Loss of RBC’s faster than the body can produce due to Heavy blood loss
Hemolytic Anemia
Premature distruction of RBC’s
Sickles disease
Genetic disease resulting in abnormal hemoglobin
Rbc’s collapse, cant pass easily through capillaries
Aplastic Anemia
Surpressed bone marrow production
Auto immune attack to bone marrow
Bone marrow cancer
Myeloid cells
Bone marrow tissue
Lymphoid cells
Any cells that mediate the production of immunity
Myeloid Leukemia
Make large number of abnormal blood cells
Lymphocytic Leukemia
Bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes
Thrombocytopenia
Low number of platelets or thrombocytes
Neutropenia
Too few neutrophils
Neutrophils help fight bacteria diseases
Myeloma
- Cancer in bone marrow
- produce non-functioning Antibodies
B cells
Make antibodies
Plasmocytomas
Tumor made from mutated immature B-cells
Solitary myeloma
One tumor site
Multiple myeloma
Most common; several tumor sites
