Blood Cells Flashcards
What are red blood cells?
Red blood cells, are also called erythrocytes, and are shaped like biconcave disks. They are made by red marrow of bones. They contain the pigment hemoglobin which gives blood its red colour and has the ability to carry oxygen. Mature red blood cells have no nuclei.
What are white blood cells?
White blood cells (leukocytes) are larger and less numerous than red blood cells. They are produced in red bone marrow, in the spleen, and in lymph nodes. White cells fight disease and infection in the body. They are able to leave the blood stream.
What are platelets?
Platelets are irregularly shaped, colourless bodies which are smaller than red blood cells. They are formed in the red bone marrow, and they aid the formation of blood clots.
The blood cells are suspended in (a. Oxygen b. plasma c. Bone d. platelets)
