Blood Basics Flashcards
Neutrophils
First to respond to bacteria or a virus
Eosinophils
Known for their role in allergy symptoms
Basophils
Known for their role in asthma
Lymphocytes
Fight infections by producing antibodies
Monocytes
Clean up dead cells
Hematocrit
Whole blood is composed of plasma cells and platelets
Plasma
55% of total blood
Buffy coat (leukocytes and platelets)
<1% of total blood

Blood type a
A antigens
B antibody
Blood type b
B antigens
A antibody
Blood type AB
AB antigens
No antibodies
Blood type O
No antigens
A and B antibodies
Agglutination
A specific antibody that will react with antigens
Enzyme multiplied immunoassay technique (EMIT)
Used by toxicologist because of its speed and high sensitivity for detecting drugs in urine
-antibodies that will bind to a specific drug are added to the subjects urine
Antigen-antibody reaction
-a animal is injected with an antigen its body will produce a series of different antibodies which are designed to attack a particular site in the antigen of interest
Kastle-Meyer
Color test-hemoglobin causes a deep pink color
Luminal test
Search out trace amounts of blood
-produces light (luminescence) in a darkened area
Precipitin test
Uses antisera normally derived from rabbits that have been inject with the blood of a known animal to determine the species origin of a questioned bloodstain
Questions when examining dried blood
- Is it blood
- From what species did the blood originate from
- If the blood is of human origin, how closely can it be associated to a particular individual
