blood and blood vessels Flashcards
what is blood made out of
platlets
red blood cells
plasma
white blood cells
what do red blood cells do
picks up co2 from tissues to lungs
carrys oxygen and nutrients from lungs to tissues
structure of red blood cells
thick sunken centre
can bend and fold and squeeze through gaps
disc shaped
what do white blood cells do
protects animals body
helps destroy bacteria
helps disable pathogens
what do platelets do
forms temporary platelets plugs to stop bleeding
digests and destorys bacteria
promoted blood clots
what do plasms do
transport components (water protients nutrients hormones and electrolytes) around the body to be used by other tissues
Carrys waste material
What do capillaries do and what is their structure
Allows oxygen and waste products to be tranfered to and from blood to reach surrounding organs and tissues
structure- one cell thick, can easily pass through walls
what do artery’s do and what is their structure
Take blood away from the heart
carry deoxygenated blood
They carry blood at high pressure
Their walls are made of elastic fibers and smooth muscles which lets them stretch as blood goes through
What do viens do and what is their structure
Carry blood towards the heart most of the time deoxygenated
Their walls are thinner then arteries and they have valves to prevent blood going backwards
What does the Circulatory system do
Transport oxygen and nutrients
Has help by blood vessels, blood and the heart
What does the pacemaker of the heart do
Produces small electric impulses to help the heart contract
Why are the walls on the left ventricle thicker then the walls of the right ventricle
The left ventricle transports blood all around the body whereas the right ventricle only transports blood to the lungs
heart steps
blood enters through the left atrium and the right atrium, the atria contracts and blood is forced into the ventricles, the ventricles contract and push blood out of the heart, valves in the heart stop blood flow backwards,
