What are the three types of transfusions?
Standard donation
Autologous donation- blood that is collected for future surgery
Intraoperative blood salvage - saving of sterile blood to be reused and transfused
What are some reasons a client might need a blood transfusion?
Excessive blood loss
Burns
Anemia
Hemophilia
Nursing actions for a platelet transfusion?
Infuse immediately
Over 15-30min
Use special transfusion set
Nursing Actions to do for a client receiving a plasma transfusion or donation?
Should be frozen upon donation
Once thawed should be infused while clotting factors are still active
Before giving PRBC what action is a priority before transfusion?
Type and cross match for antigens and RH factor
When should vital signs be taken when doing a blood transfusion?
Before
15 min after start of infusion
Upon completion
How long should you infuse PRBCs for ?
No longer than 4 hours
Before giving blood what should you prime the line with?
Normal saline
What is a acute hemolytic transfusion reaction? What are some s/s of that ?
This happens when blood that is incompatible
- fever,chills,low back pain, hypotension, tachypnea, anxiety and impending sense of doom
What should the nurse do if patient is have an acute transfusion reaction?
Stop the transfusion
Remove blood tubing
Infuse NS and monitor vitals and fluid status
Send blood back to lab for testing
