Blood Flashcards
What are the different parts of the blood?
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
What is the plasma and what is its function?
The plasma is the liquid part of the blood which trandports dissolved substances around the body. It transports: Soluble digestion products Carbon dioxide Urea from the liver to the kidneys
What are the functions of red blood cells?
They transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells.
What are the adaptations of red blood cells?
They contain the oxygen-carrying molecule - haemoglobin.
They have no nucleus so they have more room for haemoglobin.
The have a biconcave disc shape, meaning that the cells have a greater surface area, meaning that oxygen diffuses in and out rapidly.
What are white blood cells and what are their functions?
They form a part of the immune system, partly by making antibodies.
They contain a nucleus which encodes the instructions that they need to do their job.
What are platelets and what are their functions?
Platelets are tiny fragments of cells which help blood to clot.
What are uses for donated blood?
- To replace blood lost in injury
- Some people are given platelets extracted from blood to help in clotting.
- Proteins extracted from blood can also be useful for example antibodies.
What to we have to check when donating blood?
That the blood is free from disease and is the same type as the patient.
