Blood Flashcards
What the the fluid made up from?
Made up from cells, platelets and plasma.
What do red blood cells do?
Transport oxygen from the lungs to all the cells in the body.
What do white blood cells do?
Help to fight infection.
What do platelets do?
Help the blood to clot at the sight of a wound.
What does plasma do?
This is the liquid that carries everything about. E.G. Glucose is carried in the plasma.
How is blood carried around the body?
In blood vessels
What job does the Arteries do?
Carry blood AWAY from the heart.
What job does the Capillaries do?
Exchange materials at the body’s tissue.
What job does do the veins do?
Carry blood TO the heart.
What type of pressure do the Arteries carry blood at?
HIGH.
What are the Arteries walls?
Strong and Elastic as the heart pumps blood out at high pressure.
What is a lumen?
The hole in the center of the Arteries
Arteries walls are…
Thick. They contain thick layers of muscle to make them strong.
When you press down on an artery you can feel a pulse, why is this?
The high pressure means that if you press down lightly on an artery, you can feel a pulse each time the heart beats.
How big are Capillaries?
They are VERY small.
What do Arteries eventually branch into?
Capillaries.
Can you see Capillaries with the human eyes?
No.
Capillaries carry blood really close to every cells in the body to exchange…
Substances with them.
What types of walls do Capillaries have?
They have permable walls so substances can come in and out.
What do the Capillaries do?
They supply the body with nutrients and oxygen and they take out the Carbon Dixoide.
Capillaries walls are ____ cells thick?
One.
Where do veins take the blood?
Back to the heart.
Capillaries eventually join up to form…
Veins.
Blood in the veins is ___ pressure so the walls don’t have to be as thick.
Lower.
Veins have a small lumen. Why?
To help the blood flow.
Veins have ___ to keep the blood flowing in the right direction.
Valves.
