Blood Flashcards
Function of red blood cells
Contains haemoglobin that attaches to oxygen so it transports the oxygen from the lungs to the body cells
Structure of red blood cells
Bioconcave containing no nucleus but plenty haemoglobin protein
White blood cells function
(Lymphocytes and Phagocytosis
Protect the body against infection
Structure of the lymphocytes
Have a very large round nucleus and clear,non-granular cytoplasm
How it works
Produce antibodies to destroy pathogens and antitoxins to neutralise toxins released by pathogens
Structure of phagocytes
Are multi lobed and a granular cytoplasm
How it works
They have a sensitive cell surface that cal detects the chemicals released by the pathogen then they will engulf and release digestive enzymes to digest it
What are platelets
Cells involved in blood clotting and forming scabs where skin is cut/punctured
Roll of blood clotting
Prevents significant amounts of blood loss as well prevent the entry of microorganisms that could cause infection
Conversation of Fibrinogen
They release a substance called fibrinogen
Roll of Fibrinogen
Helps to change soluble plasma protein into insoluble strands of fibrin
What does Fibrin do
Forms a network of fibres that traps blood cells to form a clot
What is plasma
Is a pale-yellow liquid that consists mainly of water
What does it transport
blood cells, dissolved substances, blood proteins and hormones around the body
