blood Flashcards
what are the four components of blood
red blood cells - carry oxygen around your body
white blood cells - fight infections
platelets - work with another substance to form scabs
plasma - carries everything to the correct places
functions of red blood cells
no nucleus to make space for haemoglobin
biconcave disc that creates and increased surface area to volume ratio for diffusion
functions of white blood cells
bigger than red blood cells have a nucleus 2 different types: lymphocytes - antibodies and antitoxins phagocytes - engulf and digest
functions of platelets
very small
they clot and form scabs to stop bleeding
small fragments of cells
functions of plasma
transport blood cells, platelets, nutrients and waste products
amino acids and hormones
arterys…
thick muscular wall, small lumen
Artery - Away from heart
veins…
large lumen
Veins - Visit Valves
capillaries…
site of movement in and out, 1 cell thick wall
what is the double circulatory system
makes our system very efficient and the deoxygenated blood gets sent to the lungs to become oxygenated and then returns to the heart to be pumped round the body
