Artist’s Proof
One of a small group of prints set aside for the artist’s collection.
Baren
A convex printing tool used for burnishing or rubbing the paper onto the block.
Bench Hook
A device used to secure wood or linoleum block while cutting.
Block Print
Print made from wood, linoleum, ext., printed in relief.
Brayer
A roller made of rubber used in inking a block.
Chisel
Tool with a flat blade. Carving wood.
Editoning
Numbering, titling, and signing a set of prints.
Gouge
A tool or blade for removing wood or linoleum from nonprinting areas of a block.
Ink
Coloring matter composed of pigment, binder, and vehicle.
Knife
Tool with a flat blade.
Liner
A tool or blade for removing wood or linoleum from printing areas of a plate or block.
Lino Cut
Linoleum that is gouged, cut, and printed in relief.
Inking Plate
A piece of glass or non porous material used for mixing and spreading ink.
Newsprint
A low grade of paper used for trial proofs, blotting and sketching.
Palette Knife
A knife used for mixing and spreading ink.
Plate
General term referring to surface being printed
Printmaking
Creating an image by placing paper in contact with an inked plate or block and applying pressure.
Pull
Printing an image. Pulling the paper off the block.
Relief
Printing from the raised surface of a plate or block. Prints in reverse.
Rolling up
The application of ink with a brayer onto a block
Trial Proof
A print made by the artist to check the progress of their work.
Veiner
A tool or blade for removing wood from printing area of block.
