Block 3 Flashcards
What are two broad categories of Assessment?
- Traditional
2. Authentic
What is assessment?
The processes of gathering measurable information to meet evaluation needs.
Give an example of Traditional Assessment.
Written testing.
A single answer is correct. This assesses the progress of the student by rote and understanding levels of learning.
Explain: Authentic Assessment.
Level of learning is higher than Traditional; demonstrates all levels including application and correlation.
Traditional and Authentic Assessment can be divided into what two types?
- Formal
2. Informal
Give an example of a Formal Assessment.
Quiz or written examination. Given throughout a course to assess whether an objective has been met.
Give an example of an Informal Assessment.
Verbal critique.
What are the 3 Common Categories of Assessment?
- Diagnostic
- Formative
- Summative
Explain Diagnostic Assessment.
Assess a student’s knowledge prior to beginning a course of instruction.
Explain Formative Assessment.
Not graded. Used to wrap up a lesson and show what’s on the next lesson.
Explain Summative Assessment.
Used throughout training to measure how far the student has progressed to that point.
What are the 8 general characteristics of Effective Assessments?
Constructive Organized Comprehensive Objective Acceptable Specific Flexible Thoughtful
Traditional: What are the 6 characteristics of a good written test?
Validity (supposed to be measured) Comprehensive (detailed) Objectivity (not opinions) Usability (easy to use; grade) Reliability (yields consistent results) Discrimination (distinguish between students)
Authentic: What are the three types of Authentic Assessment?
Collaborative
Maneuver/Procedure Grades
Single-Pilot Resource Management Grades
What is Collaborative Assessment, and what are the four steps to it?
Open-Ended questions.
Replay: verbally replay the flight
Reconstruct: woulda coulda shoulda
Reflect: insights and perception
Redirect: relate to future lessons
What is the Maneuver/Procedure Grade?

What is Single-Pilot Resource Management Grading?

Manage-Decide
What are the official characteristics of a lesson plan? (CRISP FU)
Content Relation to training Instructional steps Scope Practicality Flexibility Unity
Critiques: Formative Assessment. What are the types? (WIISSS)

When are Area Forecasts (FA) issued, and how long are they valid for?
Issued three times daily, and valid for 18 hours.
How often are AIRMETs issued?
Issued every 6 hours, with intermediate updates as needed for a particular area forecast region.
What constitutes the issuance of an AIRMET?

When are SIGMETs issued?
They are unscheduled, and valid for 4 hours.
Hurricanes: 6 hours.
When is a convective SIGMET issued?
- Severe thunderstorms with surface winds greater than 50kts
- Hail at the surface greater than 3/4” in diameter
- Tornadoes
Also issued to warn pilots of embedded thunderstorms, or ones with heavy or greater precipitation that effects 40% of a 3,000 sq.ft. region.
How long are convective SIGMETs valid for?
2 hours.
How often are Winds Aloft forecasts made?
Twice a day. 0000Z and 12000Z
