Block 2 Part 1 - Cloud Computing Flashcards
Name the four types of clouds?
1) P
2) P
3) C
4) H
Public clouds
Private clouds
community clouds
Hybrid clouds
What is a Hybrid Cloud?
A hybrid cloud is a composition of two or more distinct types of cloud (private, public or community)
What is IaaS
Describe it!
Infrastructure as a Service
If, as a business, you select Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), you are essentially outsourcing your hardware needs to a cloud provider. IaaS cloud providers sell virtual access to off-site servers, storage and networking hardware. As the customer, you can build your own platform on this hardware and access it at any time, paying only for the resources you use.
What is Paas?
Describe it!
Platform as a Service
The second category of service is known as Platform as a Service (PaaS). In this model, the cloud provider takes responsibility for managing both the infrastructure and the software platform, which includes the operating system and middleware such as a runtime environment. In this service, the actual applications and data continue to be the responsibility of the customer.
What is Saas?
Describe it!
Software as a Service
Any application hosted on a remote server that can be accessed over the internet is considered to be Software as a Service (SaaS). This is the kind of cloud computing that you are most likely to be familiar with as an individual, as we discussed in Subsection 1.1.4.
The Cons of Using Clouds: Downtime
What is Uptime and Downtime?
Downtime is time during which the cloud services are not available.
Uptime is the time during which the cloud services are available. In general, cloud providers like to talk about uptime but cloud customers tend to focus on downtime!
The Cons of Using Clouds: Security
The multi-tenancy aspect of cloud architecture, where customers share i____________, p___________ and a___________, means that if a security issue arises in any of these layers, it affects everyone.
Infrastructure
platforms
applications
The Cons of Using Clouds: Security
Cloud users might also want to ensure that their cloud service provider has chosen sites for their data centres in locations that minimise the risks of n________ d_________, i__________ and t___________.
natural disasters
intruders
terrorism
The Cons of Using Clouds: Security
It is important that cloud users can trust their cloud provider to vet and carefully manage their e_________ and c_________, as a great deal of data theft, even from high-security data centres, is perpetrated by insiders.
employees and contractors
The Cons of Using Clouds: Vendor lock-in
Switching or combining cloud services has not been straightforward in the past , resulting is u________ being ‘locked in’
users
There are other cons, but I will leave it there.
The Cons of Using Clouds:
Latency
Recall that latency is the measure of how long it takes a p_______ of d______ to travel from one designated point to another and back again.
packet of data
Cloud users and cloud providers both want to reduce latency – the users want their data faster.
Response time
The target response time includes the l___________ (the time for a signal to travel from the user to the server and back) plus the time for the server to p_________ the response at the server.
latency
process
Response time
A cloud provider will aim for a target response time that is less than _______ milliseconds (0.2 seconds) because a response time of more than this will introduce a noticeable and irritating delay for the user.
200 milliseconds
