Q

What is the general theory behind Soft Tissue?

A

Relax hypertonic muscles and stretch fascial structures which improves local circulation. Often these techniques are used to relax tissues in preparation for another manipulative technique.

Q

How do you perform rib raising and what does it do?

A

Patient lies on side and places upper hand on head. Operator holds patient’s upper elbowand places other hand on posterior rib cage. Elbow is steadied while rib cage is lifted and released at different points. Can do this lying down too (fingers in angles of ribs and flexing fingers). Enhances dynamic functioning of rib cage in respiration.

Q

How do you perform Thoracic Soft Tissue and what does it do?

A

Patient can be lying on side propped up by elbow or prone. Listening hand and action hand (start just lateral to spine). Compress tissues in make-or-break fashion.

Q

How do you perform Posterior Cervical Soft Tissue Technique and what does it do?

A

Patient is supine. Operator places one hand on forehead and other between spine and articular pillars. Rhythmically stretch and compress soft tissues while side bending, rotating, and extending the cervical spine.

Q

How do you perform Posterior Cervical Stretching and what does it do?

A

Patient supine. Operator crosses forearms, places them behind patient’s head. Forward bending stretch and side-to-side. Promotes venous and lymphatic drainage.

Q

How do you perform suboccipital release and what does it do?

A

Patient is supine. Lifts head so weight of head is supported on pads of fingers just inferior to nucal line. Apply traction anteriorly and superiorly. May be used to assist in treatment of tension headaches.
