SOPS for Crossing Linear Danger Areas
Platoon Halts Lead fire team crosses and clears PSG assigns flank cover Rear Fire team moves to cover flanks TL and AR (Lead FT) return to original side of crossing Gunner and rifleman stay on fire side TL gives all clear Security crosses and continue movement
SOPS Contact on Near Side - For Danger Linear Area
Flank Security Fires at Enemy
Platoon moves across Danger Area
Platoon sets up overwatch and fires
Security teams cross danger area and rejoin platoon
Platoon uses smoke and ind. fire to break contact
Platoon moves out of area
Criteria for a Patrol Base
1) Terrain of little tactical value
2) Off main lines of drift
3) Terrain that would impede enemy movement
4) Near source of water
5) Provide some defenses: Defensible for short period of time
* Avoid:
- Hilltops, ridges, exposed ground
- Small valleys
- Roads and trails
- Built up areas
Definition of a Patrol Base

When to use “Travel”
Contact is not likely, but speed is necessary
10m between individuals
20m between teams
When to use “Traveling Overwatch”
When enemy is possible
20m between individuals
50m between teams
When to use “Bounding Overwatch”
When enemy are in area
When crossing a danger area
Squad and platoon have bounding elements to them
Type of “Bounds”
Successive Bounds:
Alternating Bounds
Successive Bounds
First team moves into position
Overwatch team then moves generally online with first team
Alternating Bounds
First team moves into position
Overwatch team moves into position in front of first element
Purpose of Rally Points
Pre- designated positions where unit moves to in order to reorganize and reassemble if dispersed
Criteria of RP
Easily identifiable
Covered and concealed
Shows no signs of enemy activity
Away from natural lines of movement and high speed avenues of approach
Purpose of ORP
Conduct SLLS Pinpoint OBJ Re-Equip: Re apply camo, equip check, prep demo, prep EPW bindings, prep litters, and med kits Drop Rucks Provide for accountability before and after raid Disseminate info after raid Re-organize after raid Conduct leaders recon of obj Issue Frago
Criteria for ORP
200-400 meters from target or 1 major terrain feature away from target
What are the 2 formations of ambushes
Linear
L Shaped
Key Factors of an Ambush
Coverage of kill zone
Existing or reinforcing obstacles to keep enemy on x
Security elements or teams to isolate kill zone
Protection of assault and support elements w/ claymores or explosives
Ability to assault through kill zone to LOA
2 Categories of Ambushes
Hasty
Deliberate
Measure for React to Ambush FAR
Unit in contact returns fire
Calls out 3d’s
Unit not in contact move along covered/concealed route to flank the enemy
Leader calls to shift fire - Unit in contact shifts fire
Flanking element begins to assault through enemy
Flanking element once near enemy calls for lift fire
Element under contact ceases fire.
Flanking element moves straight through obj. clearing enemy enroute
Troops in contact assault forward and to LOA

BTL performs PCI’s on LDRs recon
BTL gives backbried and counts LDRS recon out
BTL disseminates GOTWA to patrol
Radio is monitored at all times
Clearing ORP/PB
SL calls for short halt SL continues forward with ATL, AP, ASAW @ Location: SL places AP & ASAW in prone SL issues GOTWA to them SL, ATL conducts Recon (looking @ 3,6,9,12) SL, ATL look 50 meters beyond in every direction 100 meters beyond to 12 SL calls BTL before departing
