Blast furnace Flashcards
what is the name of copper ore
Malachite
What is the name of aluminium ore
Bauxite
What is the name of Iron ore
Heamatite
What is an ore?
A compound found in rocks that contains metals
How can Iron be extracted?
Through reduction with carbon
what is the waste product that comes from the blast furnace?
Slag
What is the name of molten ironed produced in blast furnace?
Pig Iron
What step is Calcium cabonate –> calcium oxide + carbon dioxide (what is symbols)
Step 1: CaCO3 –> CaO +CO2
What 3 substances are added in the blast furnace?
- Limestone (CaCO3)
- Iron ore, heamatite (Fe2O3)
3.Carbon (Coke) (C)
What is the first reaction to happen?
Carbon(coke) reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide (complete combustion). It is then used to form carbon monoxide. (C + O2 –> CO2) (It’s exothermic and also helps warm up furnace to correct temp)
What happens with the produced carbon dioxide? (step 2)
Carbon dioxide + carbon –> Carbon monoxide (this will reduce the oxygen) CO2 + C –> 2CO
What does the carbon monoxide do? (Step 3)
It reduces Iron(III)oxide to iron. Iron(III) oxide + Carbon monoxide –> Iron + carbon dioxide (Fe2O3 + 3CO –> 2Fe + 3CO2)
What happens with impurity: Calcium carbonate? (limestone) step 4
Calcium carbonate –> calcium oxide + Carbon dioxide (used to form slag)
It thermally decomposes. CaCO3 –> CaO + CO2
How is slag formed?
Calcium oxide (from the limestone) + Silicon dioxide (sand) –> Slag
CaO + SiO2 –> CaSiO3
