Q

What 3 substances are added in the blast furnace?

Q

What is the first reaction to happen?

A

Carbon(coke) reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide (complete combustion). It is then used to form carbon monoxide. (C + O2 –> CO2) (It’s exothermic and also helps warm up furnace to correct temp)

11
Q

What happens with the produced carbon dioxide? (step 2)

A

Carbon dioxide + carbon –> Carbon monoxide (this will reduce the oxygen) CO2 + C –> 2CO

12
Q

What does the carbon monoxide do? (Step 3)

A

It reduces Iron(III)oxide to iron. Iron(III) oxide + Carbon monoxide –> Iron + carbon dioxide (Fe2O3 + 3CO –> 2Fe + 3CO2)

Q

What happens with impurity: Calcium carbonate? (limestone) step 4

A

Calcium carbonate –> calcium oxide + Carbon dioxide (used to form slag)
It thermally decomposes. CaCO3 –> CaO + CO2
