Emerged to address poor living conditions of African Americans
Way of thinking by Black People to help them feel proud and regain self respect and self esteem
Promoted black interests - self reliance, self defence and fastened black culture
Aimed to get Black people the right to control politics in their communities

Formed by Huey newton and Bobby searle
For self defence of African-American
Began as group to protect African-Americans from police brutality and racism
Took advantage of old California law Which allowed people to carry weapons as long is that we’re not hidden
Encouraged African Americans to carry guns for self defence as Results they got involved in police shoot outs in Chicago New York and Los Angeles
Stage protest against the state of California win they wanted to outlaw the law protests were in Watts ,Detroit and Newark
Focus on community-based programs such as neighbourhood watches and feeding schemes (free breakfast) And defending African Americans from brutality
They started tutoring schemes to help black learners are achieve better results
They taught black history
The built their own clinics were black people got free medicine, first aid lessons and treatment
Where involved in drug and alcohol rehabilitation
The black power movement created 10 point plan to adjust the social political and economic aspects of their lives

In 1966 he change the ideas of Martin Luther King Junior after the death of James Meredith
He diverted the civil rights movement to the direction of the black power philosophy and did not involve white people
Carmichael Encourage black people to wear African attire to have Afro hairstyles eat African food and listen to African music and have pride in being black
He made a call for black people to unite in to find our own goals
He joined the BPP after being expelled From the students organisation

He married Miriam Makeba for 10 years and died in Guinea in 1998 from Cancer

After being released he became a spokesperson for the nation of Islam
He believed a confrontational approach was necessary
He did not promote black and white people integration
Visited Mecca and changed his way of thinking
He softened his heart towards immigration
He became less militant
He was assassinated while doing a speech in 1955

Long and short term gains

A

The black power movement encourage political party participation and supported many black candidates who were running for positions

It encouraged black communities to pull together in grassroots upliftment project and it also encourage entrepreneurship

It helped to make the police more accountable for their actions and highlighted small proportion of black people in the police force

It encouraged young men who did not believe in the Vietnam war and to stand up against the draft

It increased the self-esteem of black people and encourage people to take more of an interest in black culture

The Black arts movement emerged which was made up of politically motivated black artists writers and performers

It also led to an increase in black feminism

Universities in Floyd more black staff, Created courses in African-American studies and some universities had black student unions

The black power movement also gained a lot of media attention for the frustration of Black Americans and probably influenced the reforms that weee slowly being introduced to combat poverty and lack of opportunity

President Johnson set up a program of the form aimed to eradicating poverty and discrimination

The federal government introduced schemes to improve housing promoting education and training of poor Americans for new and better jobs
