Usually causes minor systemic symptoms.

The main symptom is pain, can be very severe and prolonged.

First aid

• Apply local heat (e.g. hot water with ammonia/household bleach)
• Clean site
• Local anaesthetic (e.g. 1–2 mL 1% lignocaine) infiltrated around the site (if still painful).
• Consider parenteral morphine or fentanyl for pain.
• Check tetanus immunisation status
