Births, Deaths and Populations Flashcards
Crude Birth Rate
CBR
number of LIVE births per 1000 population (men and women)
General Fertility Rate
GFR
The number of live births per 1000 females aged between 15-44.
Total (Period) Fertility Rate
TPFR
The average number of women that would be born to a hypothetical woman in her life.
The sum of current age-specific fertility rates ~ 2.1 is the replacement number.
Fecundity and Fertility
Fecundity = the physical ability to reproduce (is reduced by an increase in sterilisations and hysterectomies. Fertility = the realisation of this potential as births (increased by an increase in sexual activity and economic climate. decreased by an increase in contraceptions and abortions.)
Crude Death Rate
CDR
The number of deaths per 1000 population.
Age-Specific Death Rate
ASDR
Number of deaths per 1000 in age group.
Standardised Mortality Ratio
SMR
Compares the ‘observed’ number of deaths with the ‘expected’ number if age-sex distribution of populations were identical.
Eliminates the effect of age-sex confounding factors.
Census

The simultaneous recording of demographic data by the government at a particular time pertaining to all the persons who live in a particular territory.
