Births, Deaths and Populations Flashcards
Define crude birth rate
The number of live births per 1000 in the population.
Define census
Simultaneous recording of demographic data, by the government, at a particular time pertaining to all persons who live in a particular territory. Describes households and people.
Define general fertility rate
Number of live births per 1000 females aged 15-44 years.
What is the total period fertility rate?
The average number of children that would be born to a hypothetical women in her life.
How do you work out total period fertility rate?
Sum of current age-specific fertility rates.
Define crude death rate
The number of deaths per 1000 population.
What is age-specific death rate?
Number of deaths per 1000 in that age group.
What does SMR stand for?
Standardised mortality ratio.
What does SMR compare?
Observed with expected number of deaths if the age-sex distribution of a population is identical.
What is the advantage of using SMR?
It adjusts for age-sex distribution, so removes these confounders.
What are the 3 things that affect population size and structure?
Births
Deaths
Migration
Define fecundity
Physical ability to reproduce.
Give an example of how fecundity is reduced.
Increased sterilisations and hysterectomies.
Define fertility
Realisation of fecundity.
Give examples of how fertility can be increased and decreased.
Increased by increased sexual activity and better economic climate.
Decreased by increased contraception and abortions.
