Q

How is Total Period fertility rate calculated?

A

This is the theoretical number of births per woman in her lifetime. The fertility rate is calculated for each of her fertile years and these are added to give a number of children she would theoretically have. 2 is needed for population to be maintained.

Q

What is the difference between fertility and fecundity?

A

Fecundity is the physical ability to reproduce, it is reduced by hysterectomies and sterilisation.
Fertilisation is the realisation of this potential. It is increased by sexual activity, but decreases with use of contraception and abortions

Q

What is SMR? (standardised mortality ratio)

A

This is where the deaths in a population are compared to another population but the same age sex distribution is used. It removes confounding due to age and sex.

Q

What is the difference between random and systematic variation?

A

Random variation is due to chance, not everyone is the same.

Systematic variation is caused by the systems which were used to collect the data.
