BIRTH AND LABOR Flashcards
1
Q
Birthing process components
A
- powers: force cervix open so fetus can propel down
- passage: Mom’s bony pelvis/soft tissues
- passengers: fetus, placenta, amniotic membranes, amniotic fluid
- psyche: Woman’s entire being

3
Q
What nursing assessments should be done during labor?
A
fetal condition, maternal condition, impending birth
4
Q
Contraction Relaxation Phase
A
- occurs during interval phase
- relaxation should be longer than 60 seconds
5
Q
Contractions: Fetal Compromise
A
- contractions less than 2 minutes apart could indicate reduced fetal O2 supply, as can contraction durations longer than 90 seconds & intervals shorter than 60 seconds
6
Q
Why is a vaginal examination performed during labor?
A
to assess cervical opening, once cervix dilates at 10 cm, Mom can begin to push
7
Q
Fetal Positions
A
- occiput: how head is oriented when fetus is in a cephalic vertex presentation
- sacrum: breech presentation, Shoulder/ back are reference points if fetus is in shoulder presentation
8
Q
Meconium in amniotic fluid
A
- green-stained; indicates Baby passed 1 stool prior to delivery, can compromise fetal respiration
9
Q
sacral promontory
A
- the inwardly projecting anterior part of the body of the first sacral vertebra.
10
Q
ischial spines
A
- holes in pelvis that help determine the presenting body part (usually head) in the pelvisx…- stations are above ischial spines…+ stations below ischial spines
11
Q
Nurse teachings for labor PTs
A
- try repositioning for 2-3 contractions, don’t push until about 10 cms, short fast respirations, when it’s time to push (stage 2) have Mom push 4-6 sconds at a time
