A larger than life character who is courageous, loyal, brave, honest, strong, and has dignity. His accomplishments are celebrated

The britons were farmers and not warriors because they had Rome for their defense.
Anglo-Saxons invaded and the Britons accepted them peacefully because the Anglo-Saxons would protect them

He was a national hero, he was the able warrior and statesman king of Wessex.
He preserved pre-Danish civilization.
He encourage learning and education.
He required all freeman for learning and literacy and he learned the Latin and translated much of Latin to English and he loved poetry.

What are two categories that Anglo-Saxon poetry comes in
- Heroic with Beowulf recounting the virtues of his hero.
2. Elegiac- lamentations usually of death or last past.
How was Scandinavian/Celtic folk literature done.
There was no books.
All in chants and had strong religious elements.
They were reciting of stories which are in poetic form and done at ceremonial occasions.
