Birds on Tree Trunks Flashcards
Feed on sap. They drill shallow wells with their beak to access it. Medium sized. Bigger than a Robin and similar size to Flicker. Bigger than Downy & Hairy Woodpeckers. White wing bars, and a white mustache. The mustache helps keep debris from getting in their eyes. They nest in the cavities of dead trees.
Red-breasted sapsucker
Tiny - smaller than fist. Pretty common. Down at the base of the bill. Short, stubby tail that they use as a lever as the perch. Will sometimes hang out on branches.
Downy Woodpecker
Larger than a songbird, smaller than a flicker. Their tail is a little longer than the downy woodpecker. The beak is slightly longer than the downy woodpecker. Always on the trunk.
Hairy Woodpecker
Also drum on trees. Big! Red stripe on cheek only on males.
Northern Flicker
Very small. Smaller than songbirds. Oriented facing down on the trunk. Tend to travel in flocks. Black line through the eye. A little bit bluish grey.
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Always facing up the trunk. Curved long bill. Camouflaged back. White belly & throat. Tail comes into contact with the bark to use as a cantilever.
