Motivational symptoms?
need for constant excitement, involvement, companionship
Behavioral symptoms?
very active-more quickly; talk loudly or rapidly (flamboyance)
Cognitive symptoms?
poor judgement/planning
Physical symptoms?
high energy level- often the presence of little or no rest
2 kinds of bipolar disorders? and explain
1) Bipolar I disorder: full manic and MDE; mixed episodes
2) Bipolar II disorder: hypomanic episodes and MDE
Cause of bipolar disorder?
neurotransmitters & genetic factors
NTs?
1) low serotonin+ low norepinephrine = depression
2) low serotonin+ high norepinephrine= mania
Genetic factors?
ppl inherit a biological predisposition to develop bipolar disorders
% of genetic factors?
identical: 40%
fraternal: 5-10%
general pop: 1%
treatments?
lithium therapy
adjunctive psychotherapy
What is lithium therapy?
effective for treating bipolar and mania, diff. to detemine right amount of dosage; too little: nothing, too much: intoxication
What is adjunctive psychotherapy?
psychotherapy alone is rarely helpful, supplement lithium (no effect on 30% of pop)
