What is cyclothymic disorder?
- have had repeated mood swings, but none that are severe enough to be called major depressive episodes or manic episodes
- adults who experience at least 2 years (for children, a full year) of both hypomanic and depressive periods without ever fulfilling the criteria for an episode of mania, hypomania, or major depression
How many criterias are set for cyclothymic disorder?
6 (A-F)
What is Criteria A?
- at least 2 years for adults
- at least 1 year for children and adolescents
- numerous periods with hypomanic symptoms that do not meet criteria for a hypomanic episode AND
- numerous periods with depressive symptoms that do not meet criteria for a major depressive episode
What is Criteria B?
- during the 2 year period in adults
- during the 1 year period in children and adolescents
- hypomanic and depressive periods have been present for at least half the time AND
- the symptoms are persistent (preent more days than not)
- the individual has not been without the symptoms for more than 2 months at a time
full mood episodes are not present
What is Criteria C?
The diagnosis of cyclothymic disorder is made only if the
- criteria for a major depressive, manic, or hypomanic episode have never been met
What is Criteria D?
mood symptoms in Criterion A are not explained by schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, delusional disorder, or other specified or unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorder
What is Criteria E?
symptoms are not attributable
- to the physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, a medication) or
- another medical condition (e.g., hyperthyroidism)
What is Criteria F?
symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
What are the essential feature of cyclothymic disorder?
- chronic, fluctuating mood disturbance
- numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms and
- periods of depressive symptoms that are distinct from each other
When does cyclothymic disorder usually begin?
in adolescence or early adult life
What type of onset and course does a cyclothymic disorder have?
usually has an insidious onset and a persistent course
How long must symptoms last for?
- at least 2 years for adults
- at least 1 year for children and adolescents
How long must a symptom be present for?
- at least half the time
- the symptoms are persistent (present more days than not)
- not been without the symptoms for more than 2 months at a time
