Manic Episode Criteria

A

A. 1 week of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritated mood and increased activity or energy.
B. Three or more of the following symptoms: inflated self esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, more talkative, subjective experience that thoughts are racing, distractibility, goal-directed activity increase, excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences.
C. Causes impairment in social or occupational functioning or requires hospitalization to prevent harm to self or others, or there are psychotic features.
D. Episode is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance.

Hypomanic Episode Criteria

A

A. At least 4 consecutive days of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritated mood and increased activity or energy - nearly every day.
B. Three or more of the following symptoms: inflated self esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, more talkative, subjective experience that thoughts are racing, distractibility, goal-directed activity increase, excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences.
C. The episode represents a change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of the individual.
D. Disturbance in mood and change in functioning can be seen by others.
E. The episode is not severe enough to cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning or to necessitate hospitalization.
F. The episode is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition.

Major Depressive Episode Criteria

A

A. Five of the following symptoms have been present during the same 2 week period and represents a change from previous functioning; at least one of the symptoms is either depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure.
1. Depressed mood most of the day, every day.
2. Little to no interest or pleasure in all activities most of the day.
3. Significant weight loss or weight gain or decrease or increase in appetite.
4. Insomnia or hypersomnia everyday.
5. Psychomotor agitation or retardation every day.
6. Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day.
7. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt every day.
8. Diminished ability to think or concentrate every day.
9. Recurrent thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation.
B. Th symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in areas of functioning.
C. The episode is not attributable to a substance or other medical condition.
