Biotic Factors Affecting Organisms Flashcards
What are biotic factors?
Biotic factors are living factors
List some examples of biotic factors.
7
Food
Competition
Predation
Parasitism
Pollination
Seed dispersal
Human intervention
What are the two main biotic factors that affect organisms?
Food available
Competition
Write a note on how the amount of food available affects organisms
(2)
The more food that is available, the greater the number of organisms that survive
E.g. the number of berries affects the number of blackbirds and the amount of plankton affects the number of mussels
Give two examples of where the amount of food available has an affect on organisms.
The number of berries affects the number of blackbirds
The amount of plankton affects the number of mussels
Write a note on how competition affects organism
2
Competition means that plants and animals fight for scarce resources such as food, space, mates and shelter
E.g. rabbits compete with each other for food and barnacles and limpets compete for space on rocks
Give some examples or resources which organisms may compete for.
(4)
Food
Space
Mates
Shelter
Give two examples of competition within a species
Rabbits compete with each other for food
Barnacles and limpets compete for space on rocks
