Biostatistics Flashcards
What is the gold standard of study designs?
Randomized control trials
What is the evidence cycle?
Ask -> acquire -> appraise -> apply -> act
PICO
Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome
Define: surrogate outcome
An outcome the patient can’t feel, but will affect how they feel ie. c-reactive protein as an indicator for inflammation
List the strengths of a RCT.
- Comparative
2. Decreased bias
What are the types of bias?
- Selection bias
2. Information bias
Define: intent to treat
Data is analyzed as randomized.
What are the types of data?
- Continuous
2. Categorical
Risk ratio
chance of risk in treatment group/chance of risk in control group
RR > 1
Risk increase
RR < 1
Risk reduction
Define Type 1 error
The study finds a difference but there is no real difference
Type 2 error
Study does not find a difference, but there is a real difference
Alpha level
How tolerant you are of making a type 1 error. Usually set at 0.05
Beta level
How tolerant you are of making a type 2 error
