What is BIOS main two tasks?
check that all essential components are connected and functional and report any errors
load the bootstrap/boot loader from secondary storage into main memory
What does POST stand for?
Power On Self Test
What is POST?
where BIOS checks that all the essential components are connected and functional
BIOS bootstrap
bootstrap is loaded from secondary storage into main storage by BIOS
with out the BIOS the OS could not load as when the computer loads there are no boot up instructions stored in main storage
Where is BIOS stored?
a ROM chip
Where can BIOS settings be stored?
on CMOS
What does CMOS stand for?
Complementary Metal Oxide Semi
CMOS power supply
has its own power supply (a battery) which allows the data stored on it to remain even after the rest of the machine is powered off
BIOS settings can be edited accessed at boot up and saved when powered down
