Biorisk Management Flashcards
What defines a hazard?
Something, object or situation, that has the potential to bring harm/adverse effects to a subpopulation or individual when exposed.
What defines a risk?
Likelihood that something bad is bound to happen.
This is a systematic process of evaluating the likelihood and consequences of exposure of workplace hazards. It also aims to reduce a risk to an acceptable risk.
Risk assessment
Likelihood of exposure to hazards is weighed against the potential severity of harm.
Risk evaluation
This is the integration of biosafety and biosecurity to manage risks when working with infectious agents.
Biorisk management
This is a framework that integrates the best practices and procedures to effectively achieve its objectives.
CWA 15793:2011
Identification of risks and hazards, humans and animals inside the lab, and work activity alongside lab environment.
Defining the situation
How individuals inside may be exposed to a hazard.
Defining the risks
Comparing the likelihood and consequences of infection
Characterizing the risks
If the likelihood of exposure is unlikely but the consequences of exposure is severe, how high is the risk?
Medium
If the likelihood of exposure is likely but the consequences of exposure is moderate, how high is the risk?
High
If the likelihood of exposure is unlikely but the consequences of exposure is negligible, how high is the risk?
Low
