How can the past shape present healthcare?
Patients’ own experiences and perceptions of healthcare as well as experiences of elders or others like them.
Cultural Competence
The ability to provide care to patients with diverse values, behaviours and beliefs, including tailoring of healthcare to meet patients social, cultural and linguistic needs.

- Linguistic or cultural support
- Enabling dietary practices
- Enabling wishes for important life event (birth)
Cultural humility
No two patients are the same even if they share the same culture
Unconscious bias
Feelings and perceptions we have towards people of a specific group based on our own experiences
Why should we deliver culturally appropriate healthcare?

- Improves quality of life
- Protects from discrimination
