Biopsychology: The nervous system Flashcards
What are the two sub categories of the nervous system?
Central nervous system
peripheral nervous system
What is the central nervous system made up of?
the brain and the spinal cord
What is the function of our brain in the central nervous system?
is the center of all conscious awareness and completes higher thought functions such as attention, perception, memory, language and thinking.
What is the role of the spinal cord in the CNS?
it send information from the PNS to the CNS and vice versa. It is also responsible for reflex actions.
What are the two sub categories of the peripheral nervous system?
Autonomic nervous system
somatic nervous system
What is the role of the ANS?
it governs vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress response.
What is the function of the somatic nervous system?
controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors.
What is the function of the endocrine system?
governs the release of hormones within the body into the bloodstream.
the major endocrine gland is the pituitary gland. It controls the release of hormones from all the other endocrine glands in the body.
