biopsychology approach Flashcards
two main functions of the nervous system
collect, process and respond to information in the environment
co-ordinate the working of different organs and cells
what is your central nervous system made up off
brain - conscious awareness
spinal cord - extension of brain and reason for reflex actions
what is the peripheral nervous system
transmits messages through millions of neurons
what are the two parts of the peripheral nervous system
somatic nervous system - carries sensory and motor information
automic nervous system - governs vital functions (breathing, heart rate ect)
what is sympathetic and parasympathetic
sympathetic get you going
parasympathetic brings you back to normal
what are the three different neurons
sensory neurons - carries messages from PNS to CNS
relay neurons - connect sensory to motor or relay neurons
motor neurons - connect CNS muscle or glands (effectors)
what is synaptic transmission
where the neighbouring neuron communicates with each other through chemical messages
what is excitation
neurotransmitter increases the positive charge of the post synaptic neuron
more likley for an electric impulse to be passed on
what is inhibition
neurotransmitter increase the negative charge of the post synaptic neuron
less likley for an electric impulse to be passed on
