Biopsychology Flashcards
3 types of neurons
Motor _ CNS to effectors muscles and glands
Sensory - PNS to CNS
Relay - connect sensory to motor or other relay neurons
The structure of a neuron
Cell body -> includes nucleus (genetic material)
Dendrites off the cell body (nerve impulses to neurons)
Axons carries impulses away from cell body
Myelin sheath (protective layer speeds up transmission)
Nodes of ranvier are gaps along myelin sheath that speeds up
Terminal buttons (communicate with next neurons)
Electric Transmission
Neuron inside the cell is negatively charged. When activated by a stimulus it becomes positively charged causing an ACTION POTENTIAL
This creates an electrical impulse that travels down the axon towards the end of the neuron
Synaptic Transmission - Chemical transmission
Neural networks - groups of neurons
Each neuron is separated by a synapse
