Biopsychology Flashcards
What are the two components of the nervous system?
- Central nervous system
- Peripheral nervous system
What two things make up the central nervous system?
- brain
- spinal cord
What are the two components of the peripheral nervous system?
- autonomic nervous system
- somatic nervous system
What is the autonomic nervous system responsible for?
unconscious activities
What is the somatic nervous system responsible for?
conscious activities
What are the two components of the autonomic nervous system?
- sympathetic nervous system
- parasympathetic nervous system
What is the sympathetic nervous system responsible for?
gets body “ready for action” (fight or flight OR tend and befriend)
What is the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for?
calms the body down (rest and digest)
What does a sensory neuron do?
Transmits electrical impulses from receptors to the CNS
What does a relay neuron do?
Transmits electrical impulses between sensory and motor neurons
What does a motor neuron do?
Transmits electrical impulses from the CNS to the effector
What is a synapse?
A small “junction” between a neuron and another neuron, or a neuron and an effector cell.
What is a neurotransmitter?
Chemical messengers that carry signals between neurons, or nerve cells, and other cells in the body.
