Biopsychology Flashcards
What is the function of the sensory neurons?
The nerve cells that transmit electrical impulses from receptors to the CNS
Function of relay neurons?
The nerve cells that transmit electrical impulses between sensory and motor neurons.
Function of motor neurons?
The nerve cells that transmit electrical impulses from CNS to effectors.
What are the 7 sections of the bervous system?
Nervous system
CNS. Peripheral NS
Autonomic Somatic
Sympathetic Parasympathetic
What is the central nervous system made out of?
It is made up of the brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system made of?
Made up of neurons that connect the CNS to the rest of the body.
Role of somatic nervous system?
Controls the conscious activities, e.g running or playing a video game.
Role of autonomic nervous system?
This controls the unconscious activities, e.g digestion
Role of sympathetic nervous sysytem?
Gets the body ready for action. The “fight or flight” system. Stops digestion and raises heart rate etc
Role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
The “rest and digest system”. It brings down heart rate and speeds up digestion.
What happens in the intial shock response and where? (Fight or Flight)
The hypothalumus triggers activity in the sympathetic branch of the autonomic system. This stimulates the adrenal medulla which causes the release of adrenaline and noradrenaline.
What are the three neurons?
Sensory
Motor
Relay
