Biopsychology Flashcards
What are the two main divisions of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
What is the role of the CNS?
Processes information and coordinates responses.
What is the role of the PNS?
Transmits information to and from the CNS.
What is synaptic transmission?
The process by which neurons communicate via neurotransmitters.
What is the difference between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters?
Excitatory (e.g., adrenaline) increases the chance of an action potential, inhibitory (e.g., GABA) decreases it.
What triggers the fight or flight response?
Activation of the sympathetic nervous system in response to stress.
What role does the adrenal gland play in fight or flight?
Releases adrenaline, increasing heart rate and alertness.
