Biopsychology Flashcards
What’s the role of the somatic nervous system?
carry information from the outside world to the brain & provide muscle responses via motor pathways
What’s the role of the autonomic nervous system?
role in homeostasis, only consists of motor pathways, contains 2 components, the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system
What’s the role of the sympathetic nervous system?
involved in responses that prepare the body for fight or flight
What’s the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
relax the body and return to normal resting state (decrease heartrate)
describe the pathway for the nervous system
-sensory neurons found in receptors such as the eyes
-sensory neurons carry nerve impulses to the spinal cord and brain
-once they have reached the brain, they are turned into sensations (vision hearing etc)
(not all sensory neurons reach the brain and stop at the spinal cord, allowing quick reflexes
-impulse then carried to the motor neuron (found in the CNS) when the motor neuron is triggered, neurotransmitters released to receptors on muscles
what are dendrites?
receive signals from other neurons
what’s the role of an axon?
carries action potential away from the cell body towards axon terminals
what’s the role of myelin sheath?
insulates the axon so the electrical impulse travels faster
what’s the role of the pre-synaptic terminal?
connects neurons to other neurons
