Biopsychology Flashcards
Define nervous system
Consists of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Communicates using electrical signals
What are the Nervous systems 2 main functions?
- To co-ordinate working of different organs/cells
- Collect, process and respond to info in the environment
2 main Glands of the Endocrine system and their functions
THYROID GLAND- Produces a hormone (thyroxide) which secreted into bloodstream and affects any cell with a receptor for particular hormone.
PITUTARY GLAND- Located in brain, ‘master gland’. Controls and releases hormones from all endocrine cells
Explain the process of synaptic transmission (4marks)
-Action potential travels down the axon of presynaptic neuron
-This triggers vesicles to move towards the presynaptic membrane and release neurotransmitters into synapse
-Neurotransmitters diffuse across synapse
-They bind with receptors in postsynaptic neuron
-Causing action potential in postsynaptic neuron
Give one difference between the autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system
ANS is involuntary and SNS is voluntary (under conscious control)
How does the Endocrine system work with flight or flight
-Fight or flight evolutionary response
-Controlled by our ANS (sympathetic state)
-Adrenaline is hormone and neuron transmitter main hormone involved
